Central Pacific

Rainforest that runs straight down to the sea, and the shortest drive to the coast from San José.

The Central Pacific — Jacó, Herradura, Esterillos, Manuel Antonio and the coast between them — is where the rainforest meets the ocean without a dry zone in between. It is greener, wetter and more dramatic than Guanacaste, with steep forested headlands dropping to the water.

It is also the closest coast to San José: roughly ninety minutes on a good road, which makes a weekend house genuinely practical rather than aspirational. Manuel Antonio's national park anchors the southern end and constrains development around it.

Properties here are often hillside, often with substantial ocean views, and almost always surrounded by active wildlife — this is the part of the country where toucans and sloths are a daily matter rather than an excursion. Rainfall is significant from May to November and should inform both the site and the construction.
