Guanacaste

Dry forest, long beaches and the most reliable sunshine in the country.

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's driest and sunniest province, which is the single fact that shapes everything about living there. From December to April it barely rains; the forest loses its leaves, the light turns hard and golden, and the wind blows steadily from the north-east. From May the rain returns in the afternoons and the whole province turns green within a fortnight.

Liberia's international airport puts most of the province within an hour's drive of a direct flight to North America, which is why the coast developed first and why infrastructure here is further along than anywhere else outside the Central Valley.

Homes range from beachfront condominiums in the established resort communities to large inland properties with room for horses, water and regenerating forest. Water availability varies significantly by district and is the first thing worth verifying on any site.
